In 1926, Maude Campbell became the first female passenger to fly aboard a Western Air Express flight and is reported to be the first female passenger to fly on a scheduled commercial flight in the United States. As a young secretary in 1926, she flew from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles via Las Vegas on Western Air Express. Borrowing a leather flying suit and goggles from a pilot, she sat in-between sacks of mail in the open-cockpit of a wood and fabric Douglas M-2. The 650-mile trip took 6 hours.
