#Onthisday in 1938, Pan American Airways signed a multi-year lease with the City of San Francisco for a base at Treasure Island. In 1935, Pan American Airways inaugurated the world’s first transoceanic service in fixed-wing aircraft with service to Asia from its base at Alameda on San Francisco Bay. When the west end of Alameda Island was sold to the US Navy for $1 in 1936, Pan American had to find a new location for their flying boat services. Moving to Treasure Island, Pan American built a hangar for their flying boats, a major attraction of the Golden Gate International Exposition, which was held the next year. Pan American's administration building and two hangars are still standing today. Have you ever been to Treasure Island? #avgeek #aviation #SFHistory photograph: Pan American Airways, Boeing 314; 01/1939 Gift of Reid W. Dennis 2010.244.001 This image was posted on August 22, 2023.
