Happy Birthday, United Airlines! Varney Air Lines, one of the four companies that merged to create United Air Lines in 1931, began operations #onthisday in 1926. The other three founding companies were National Air Transport, Pacific Air Transport, and Boeing Air Transport. By 1934, all four subsidiaries had been fully absorbed into a single company operating as United Air Lines, which became the major carrier on the San Francisco–Chicago–New York route known as the “Main Line.”
