#OnThisDay in 1969, the first widebody jet landed at San Francisco International Airport. In advance of the regularly scheduled widebody service that would begin in 1970, Pan American World Airways brought its new Boeing 747 “jumbo jet” to SFO to display the new class of airliner for the people of the Bay Area. SFO had reconfigured and equipped its gating areas to handle the new airliner with its top-mounted cockpit and partial upper level passenger deck.
