#OnThisDay in 1971, the first McDonnell Douglas DC-10 service started at San Francisco International Airport. United’s DC-10 was the first of the three-engine, or tri-jet, wide-body airliners to arrive at SFO. The DC-10 was designed for medium- to long-range flying and could carry nearly 400 passengers.
