Pan American Airways’ Clipper flying boats were named after the clipper ships of history. This postcard features both a Pan Am Clipper flying boat and a clipper sailing ship. The caption on the reverse of this postcard from 1935 reads, “’Wings and sails’ / The arrival of the modern flying boat simultaneously with the ‘clipper’ of yesterday thru San Francisco’s ‘Golden Gate’ is an occasion of much exhaltation - a sight never to be forgotten, especially toward evening when the sun is setting.” This image was posted on January 12, 2016.
