In 1925, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (first to the South Pole in 1911) and Lincoln Ellsworth unsuccessfully attempted to fly two Dornier Do J Wal flying boats to the North Pole, as Amundsen described in “My Polar Flight.” In 1926, Amundsen and Ellsworth again attempted to fly over the North Pole, this time accompanied by an Italian crew and Umberto Nobile; they took to the skies in Nobile's airship “Norge” and flew from Spitsbergen, Norway, over the North Pole to Alaska. This was the first crossing of the Arctic Ocean by air. Learn more about polar exploration in "#TerraCognito: Published Works of Discovery by Aerial Explorers", on display, pre-security, in the Aviation Museum and Library in the International Terminal. The Aviation Museum and Library is open daily from 10am to 4:30pm. http://bit.ly/TerraCognito #AerialArcheology #PolarExploration #RichardByrd #earlyaviation Amundsen congratulates Byrd after his return from a flight over the North Pole 1926 Collection of Library of Congress LC USZ62 13896 1995.54.001
