Richard E. Byrd, an early aviator, is famous for his early expeditions to the North and South Poles. He is known for reportedly being the first person to fly over the North and South Poles, though the former claim is disputed. His trips to Antarctica were widely reported on and documented, including the famous flight over the South Pole. "With Byrd at the South Pole," was released in 1930, documenting the 14 months Byrd and his crew spent in the Antarctic. After his trailblazing trip, the United States Navy promoted him to the rank of Rear Admiral; he was nicknamed the Admiral of the Antarctic.
