Cobalt blue was one of the few mineral colors that could withstand the heat of glaze firing. Around 1830, manufacturers developed additional colors, such as underglaze pink, shown here, by adding a small amount of chrome to tin oxide. Cobalt blue however, remained the most popular transferware color.
