Thai Airways International began service #onthisday in 1960 as a joint venture between SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System), the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and Thai Airways Company (TAC), Thailand's flag carrier, to expand the Thai aviation industry beyond Asia. Thai Airways International took over international flights from TAC while TAC continued to fly domestic routes. In 1988, Thai Airways International and TAC merged into a single flag-carrying airline.
