The first McDonnell Douglas DC-10 entered service #onthisday in 1971 with American Airlines. The DC-10 was initially designed to be operated on transcontinental or regional routes at smaller airports, thus broadening the widebody market to more airlines and a greater proportion of the traveling public. McDonnell Douglas portrayed their DC-10 as the widebody for the middle-class family in a promotional poster. American's inaugural DC-10 service operated from Los Angeles to Chicago.
