Shout out from the Museum to our awesome colleagues in @flySFO’s Facilities department for their help with our late night cleanings! #MuseumMondayThis tweet was posted on December 12, 2022.
What’s happening at the museum? Our team is busy keeping the art at the airport in tiptop shape. This includes performing cleanings such as this one on Bruce Beasley’s “The Hesperides.” Read about how we care for the Public Art Collection: https://t.co/zX3TAHv3Bw #MuseumMondayThis tweet was posted on December 12, 2022.
Sometimes after objects go on display, they need a little love. Our 1:10 scale model Douglas DC-8 received attention after a piece of the interior wall detached. Our conservator promptly performed the necessary maintenance. #MuseumMonday#BehindTheScenesThis tweet was posted on November 21, 2022.
The work requires assembling, documenting, photographing, and disassembling the models. This particular aircraft is a remote controlled 1:3.5 scale model of a Davis D-1 with a functional radial engine. #BehindtheScenes#AvGeek#MuseumMonday#MuseumLifeThis tweet was posted on November 22, 2021.
Here, we pack a slide rule into a foam-lined tray using foam blocks and sheets, tissue paper, and metal pins – which are all saved and reused for other packing jobs. What’s going on in the museum? We’re packing objects for our upcoming exhibition #MathAtSFO. Our workshops aren’t in the terminals, so we must prepare objects for the short journey over from our building. #behindthescenes#SneakPeek#MuseumMondayThis tweet was posted on July 26, 2021.
We have over 1,700 model aircraft in our collection! It’s not enough to collect and exhibit them, though. Check out this video of our conservator demonstrating how we preserve and conserve these important collection objects: https://t.co/HUr81TLd6k

Can you imagine cleaning over 5,000 three-by-three inch canvases? Twice a year, one of our wonderful staffers takes a few sessions, with a cumulative time of 24 hours, to clean “Gateway” by #IkJoongKang. #behindthescenes#MuseumMonday#MuseumFromHome https://t.co/WTJ6HV7jqz https://t.co/b0faJa4WbfThis tweet was posted on November 30, 2020.
What was the museum up to while International Terminal A has been closed? We did some housekeeping! Cleaning “Salty Peanuts” by Mildred Howard took our crew of two over four hours to complete.
International Terminal side A reopens tomorrow! #MuseumFromHome#MuseumMonday https://t.co/YqGixHpXWeThis tweet was posted on August 31, 2020.
In advance of construction work at the Aviation Museum & Library, our team has been busy with the deinstallation of our long-term exhibit on the China Clipper. One challenging object to deinstall was a 10-ft tall China Clipper propeller. Stay tuned for more updates! #MuseumMondayThis tweet was posted on August 17, 2020.
