This Pan American Airways poster from circa 1939 by the artist Frank McIntosh advertises travel from San Francisco to Hawaii on a Boeing 314. The Honolulu Clipper entered service in early 1939. The largest and most luxurious flying boat of its time, the Boeing 314 had a capacity for up to seventy-four passengers. It featured a clean, strut-less exterior with a large, cantilevered wing and a tripletail for stability. Powered by four Wright Twin Cyclone engines, the Boeing 314 could travel at a cruising speed of 183 mph, completing the 2,400-mile trip from San Francisco to Honolulu in 16 to 20 hours. poster: Pan American Airways, San Francisco - Hawaii Overnight; c. 1939 Gift of Jon E.
