The Convair XC-99 was a prototype cargo aircraft used by the United States Air Force in the 1940s. In its double-decker fuselage, the XC-99 could carry 100,000 pounds of cargo powered by six Pratt & Whitney engines. With a wingspan of 230 feet and measuring 185 feet, it had a range of over 8,000 miles. A commercial variant, the Convair Model 37, was planned but was never put into production. Nevertheless, Pan American Airways, who ordered 15 airframes, produced these postcards to advertise the Model 37 as a “Preview of Tomorrow’s Flying Clippers” postcard: Pan American World Airways, Convair Model 37; late 1940s Gift of Jon E.
