When midwestern businessman Harold Bixby (1890-1965) worked for the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) in partnership with Pan American Airways (PAA), CNAC exclusively flew American-built aircraft types. These aircraft were sent to China by ship and assembled there by CNAC maintenance crews. Here we see the wings fitted to a new CNAC Ford Tri-Motor, a rugged design well-suited to the lack of aviation infrastructure in China in the 1930s. “Unlocking an Archival Treasure: The Harold Bixby Collection” is on display in the Aviation Museum and Library. Located pre-security in the International Terminal, the Aviation Museum and Library is open daily from 10am to 4:30pm. https://bit.ly/Bixby-Collection 📸: Assembling a Ford Tri-Motor at Shanghai 1930s photograph Collection of SFO Museum 2019.121.0127 R2023.1301.007 This image was posted on August 27, 2024.
