California College of the Arts’ (CCA) design program includes a course called Machinic Modernity. The class intersects contemporary design practices with a global understanding of “progress” framed by Western interpretations of modernity and technology. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) design student Celia Ziyan Cai’s project for Machinic Modernity, "Constitution," reflects identity in today’s digital-oriented society. With herself as the subject, the artist uses a rich mix of images, graphics, and typography to explore how the relationships between organic beings and artificial beings are constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in digital environments. The designs are presented as a dramaturgy structured in four parts: Identity, Community, Environment, and Catharsis. (CCA) design program includes a course called Machinic Modernity.
