The first flight of the Boeing 727 was #OnThisDay in 1963. The medium range and capacity of the 727 made it suitable for shorter flights and for regional airports with short runways. The only tri-jet developed by Boeing, the 727 also had a uniquely located door and air stair that allowed passengers to exit from the back of the aircraft.
