United Air Lines signed a lease on October 1, 1940, to relocate their Western Division operation, maintenance, and overhaul base from Cheyenne, Wyo., to San Francisco Airport, which was a great boost to the local economy. Cheyenne had been a critical midpoint between Chicago and San Francisco in the 1930s for shorter-range, unpressurized aircraft of the day.
