Before satellites and computers: these photographs of Mills Field in 1928 document the various instruments airport workers used to take weather readings. Built on bay-front pastureland, Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco was opened in 1927 as a temporary, experimental airport. Instruments were installed to document fluctuations in the airport’s weather day-to-day, and over time, to determine the site’s viability for long-term aviation use.
