#OnThisDay in 1927, the Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco began operations. The first graded airstrip was 4,950 feet long and surfaced in rolled rock fill covered with two inches of earth. In its first full month of operation, the airport registered nineteen airplane landings and nineteen passengers.
