#OnThisDay in 1940, TWA (Trans World Airlines) inaugurated Boeing 307 Stratoliner transcontinental service. The Boeing 307 was the first pressurized commercial airliner, but only ten were built, of which TWA owned five. Pressurization allowed the Stratoliner to cruise at 20,000 feet. TWA promoted the aircraft as having the capability of flying “above the weather” instead of through or around it, which meant a smoother overall flight compared to other non-pressurized airliners of the period. All five planes were sold to French airline Aigle Azur by the 1950s. Image: TWA (Trans World Airlines), Boeing 307 Stratoliner, 1946.
