During the Great Depression, radio sales soared as the airwaves provided cost-effective entertainment. Cathedral radios are perhaps the most iconic style of radio from this booming era. Nicknamed for their resemblance to the interior arches of the great European cathedrals, they were simply constructed of thin plywood and decorative veneers molded over arched wooden frames.
