English architect and designer Augustus W. N. Pugin (1812–52) embraced Gothic as the only true design style. Gothic wallpaper patterns displayed architectural imagery such as pointed arches, crockets, trefoils, and rose or circular windows found on gothic buildings, particularly cathedrals. A prolific wallpaper designer, he created numerous wallpapers for the Houses of Parliament in London.
