As one of the wealthiest African Americans of her time, Madam C. J. Walker commissioned Villa Lewaro, an Italianate-style, thirty-room mansion to be built in Irvington, New York - an area home to some of the wealthiest white Americans in the country, including John D. Rockefeller. The estate, designed by Vertner Woodson Tandy (1885–1949), one of New York's first licensed Black architects, is now a National Historic Landmark and National Trust for Historic Preservation National Treasure. In this photograph, Madam C. J. Walker Beauty Culturists conference attendees congregate around the back terraces and reflecting pool of Villa Lewaro. Learn more about Madam C. J. Walker in our photography exhibition, "In the Driver's Seat: The Rise of Madam C. J.
