United opened the airline industry's first kitchen in Oakland, California in the late 1930s. In the 1960s, United built a flight kitchen at SFO. The sign in the photo reads, "one of sixteen kitchens, the San Francisco kitchen is the largest and most modern in United Air Lines. Built at a cost of over $600,000, the kitchen and the cafeteria is designed to handle the DC-8 meal service.
