These two cats, imitating the gods Daikoku and Ebisu, are playing Go, a strategy board game invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. One cat holds a wish-granting mallet and mimics Daikoku; the other holds a sea bream, a symbol of good luck, and mimics Ebisu, two of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune in Japan. This exhibition was made possible by a generous loan from Mingei International Museum.
