Although Alaska Airlines can trace its roots back through various incarnations to the early 1930s, it officially began operating as Alaska Airlines on June 6, 1944. The iconic Eskimo on Alaska's aircraft tails was first introduced in 1972. A Native Alaskan of Inupiat or Yupik descent in a traditional qulittaq or parka with ruff adorns the airlines livery and many Native Alaskans appreciated the airline for picking a representation of their culture.
