#OnThisDay in 1927, the Mills Field Municipal Airport of San Francisco officially began operations. The first graded airstrip was 4,950 feet long and surfaced in rolled rock fill covered with two inches of earth. In its first full month of operation, the airport registered nineteen airplane landings and nineteen passengers. Today, SFO averages more than 1,200 aircraft arrivals and departures daily on runways between 7,650 and 11,870 feet in length.
