Have you ever seen a Boeing 314 Wright Twin Cyclone fourteen-cylinder engine? Check out these photos from 1943 showing mechanics fixing an engine with a blown cylinder. Notice also the large opening behind the engine leading to into the engine nacelle. A walkway in the aircraft’s massive wing actually allowed mechanics to perform some engine work while in flight.
