Christian Herter (1839–83) arrived in New York from Germany in 1859 and became a full partner in his brother Gustave’s firm in 1864, forming Herter Brothers. The large firm created interiors for some of the most magnificent homes across the country. #VictorianPaperedWall

To produce the dado, Bauer relied on a published engraving and a written description of it. He then located a sample of Wheeler’s design for the ceiling from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection. #VictorianPaperedWall #Wallpaper

To create the reproductions, art director Stephen Bauer traveled to Ionia, Michigan’s public library where the only surviving installation of the fill and frieze of Wheeler’s Honeybee wallpaper exists.

Reproducing historic wallpaper is no easy feat. In 2015, @BradburyWalls completed a commission for the Mark Twain House in Connecticut. The project recreated Candace Wheeler’s Honeybee wallpaper from 1881, which included a fill, dado, frieze, & ceiling paper #VictorianPaperedWall
