On January 1, 1937, United Air Lines started the first Douglas DC-3 service to San Francisco Airport. The efficiency of advanced airliners began to make passenger service profitable. United Air Lines used the 21-seat Douglas DC-3 for eight flights daily from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and coast-to-coast service to New York in just fifteen hours.
