In the 1970s, Hughes Airwest advertised itself as the “Top banana in the West” and caricatured its yellow aircraft as flying bananas on its ads and promotional materials. In 1980, it was bought by the newly formed Republic Airlines, which was formed through a merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways.
