Shanghai: High-Rise Architecture and the Remaking of China’s Gateway to the World See all the exhibitions.

This nonaviation exhibition was on display between April 2010 and October 2010 in the A-01 International South Wall gallery, located in International Terminal

Shanghai played a historic role as the cultural and economic center of East Asia throughout the first half of the 20th century. Beginning in 1990, the Chinese government launched an ambitious building program to make the city once again the financial hub for the region and a symbol of modernity and innovation. Better City, Better Life: High-Rise Architecture and the Remaking of China’s Gateway to the World is scheduled to coincide with the 2010 World’s Fair hosted by Shanghai, San Francisco’s sister city. Models, drawings, photographs, and video components will illustrate ten architectural projects at the center of the dramatic transformation of Shanghai’s skyline during the past two decades. Iconic buildings from seven different architecture firms are represented. A special emphasis is given to Gensler’s Shanghai Tower, which incorporates a variety of innovative features necessary for sustainable urban development, and will stand as the centerpiece of Shanghai’s skyline when completed in 2014.
