Long before the commercial manufacture and distribution of Halloween costumes, turn-of-the-century women's magazines printed instructions for making a variety of costumes at home. Phyllis Galembo's photographs of antique and modern Halloween masks and costumes reveal many of the styles and variations that this ancient tradition has manifested in America over the last one hundred years.
